Seven boxes, one burger
The same sandwich, packed in Spain, Poland, Hong Kong, Italy, Belgium, the UK and the USA. Most of the box never changes; the interesting part is what does.
Laid flat, a Big Mac box is a diagram of a Big Mac. A band of orange with white sesame dots is the bun, a wavy strip of green is the lettuce, a band of dark brown is the patty, and the arches sit on the brown like a label on a jar. The drawing runs straight across the folds, so that when the box is closed the burger wraps all the way round it.
Five boxes from 2020 and 2021 show how fixed that drawing is. The boxes from Spain, Poland, Hong Kong, Italy and Belgium use the same bands in the same order and the same proportions, with “Big Mac” set small in orange above them.1 If you cover the small print, you can’t tell which country they came from.

The differences are in the margins. The Italian box carries a maroon roundel on its flap; the others have recycling marks and codes in the corners, in whatever language and system each market needs. The brand is global in the middle and local at the edges, and the edges are where the regulations live.
When the drawing changes
Two boxes break the pattern, in opposite directions. The UK’s 2025 Minecraft edition keeps the diagram but redraws it in square pixels: the sesame seeds become a grid of white blocks, the lettuce a stepped green line, and the arches a blocky yellow M. “Big Mac” is set in a pixel face, and the film’s title is printed upside down on the lid so that it reads the right way when the box is open.

The American box from 2023 throws the drawing away altogether. It is bare brown board printed in one colour, with “THE BIG MAC” stacked in heavy red capitals and a QR code beside it. Without the bands it reads less like a burger and more like a shipping carton, which seems to be the point of the ‘As Seen In’ promotion.2
Seven boxes is not a survey. But it is enough to show which parts of a piece of packaging a brand treats as its identity, and which parts it lets each market change.
Notes
- The catalogue numbers run in the order the boxes were acquired, not the order they were made, so MCDPKG0037 is not the oldest. ↩
- Check the details of the promotion before publishing; this note is a placeholder. ↩
